Milling Oak Logs For Future Furniture in New Homes
When two brothers decided to build their new homes, they had to remove several oak trees from their future home sites. Not wanting the beautiful trees to go to waste, they called us. Working with a grapple truck company, they brought a total of 22 logs to us. The amount of usable lumber in those logs was around 3,000 board feet and the logs weighed over 20,000 pounds (10 tons)! It took a couple days, but we milled up all their logs on our Wood-Mizer LT40 Wide portable sawmill. Some were turned into live edge slabs and others were quartersawn. A couple were turned into mantles. The lumber air-dried for several months and then was moved into one of our dehumidification kilns to get the moisture content down to 8%. At that point we sterilized the wood so that they could safely use it in their new homes.
