Turning Gnarly, Knotty Pine Logs on the Sawmill into Beautiful Boards for Farmhouse Tables

We recently had the privilege of milling up about 1800 board feet of 2x10x16 boards to be turned into farmhouse tables for a customer.  Many sawmills reject these type of logs and they are often taken to a landfill.  The sawmills are not trying to be irresponsible or wasteful.  These sawmills are often milling up pine for a specific purpose, and that is the production of construction timbers.  The knots are points of structural instability if you are using the boards for some form of construction.  That is where we come in, because our sawmill can handle these logs.   When milled right, these rejected logs can produce beautiful, figured boards.  The most common use of these boards is the building of rustic farmhouse tables.  After milling up the boards, we moved them into our kiln to be dried quickly and then sterilized to kill any insects and their dormant eggs.  We can’t wait to see the finished product that comes out of these boards.
