Black Locust on the Sawmill

A customer recently brought us Black Locust logs to custom mill into boards for their dock.  Surprisingly, this was the first time we ever milled up Black Locust, but what we did not expect was the smell.  It smelled like freshly trimmed weeds.

Some interesting facts about Black Locust:

  • Black Locust is extremely resistent to rot and insects.  So, it does not need chemical treatments to keep those pesky insects away;
  • It is a very hard wood (around 1,700 on the Janka scale) and rough on the sawblades; and
  • It grows about 4 feet per year.

Needless to say, the dock they are going to build will probably last longer than the customer will.
